Episode 7.05 – Councillor Morgaine Halpin – Ward 2 Central Elgin

Morgaine is a first term Central Elgin councillor in the ward her family has called home for eight generations. She lives in Sparta with her children – Elliot, Robin, and Sage.

As a member of council, Morgaine serves on the boards for Catfish Creek Conservation Authority and Central Elgin’s Not for Profit Housing board. She is also a director on the board of Nokee Kwe, an indigenous-led employment and education centre in nearby London.

The first set is common to almost every conversation

1) I start all conversations allowing you to introduce yourself, share your journey to elected office. Some background, why you ran for office

2) Paint a picture of Ward 2 of Central Elgin who lives there – what do they do for a living? What issues most commonly end up in your inbox?

3) Zooming out a bit further, how does Ward 2 fit into Central Elgin as a whole?

3) How does Central Elgin fit into the rest of SW Ontario?

More in depth questions

1) You and your entire council from my understanding was brand new as of 2022. It’s not often that no incumbents survive an election. How was becoming a councillor in that environment?

2) There also seem to have been some challenges around the table – CAO leaving, IC ruling against the Mayor. As a councillor how do you move forward?

3) You are a small municipality wrapping around St Thomas (and near London) how do those bigger centres and the development (VW Plant for example) impact your community?

4) What is something you are looking forward to in 2024?
